Dinner Meeting:  Is the UN Climate Change Process Moving Forward or Backward?

GUEST SPEAKER(S)

  • Larry Greene, Executive Director, Sacramento Metropolitan Air Quality Management District

PROGRAM TOPIC

This presentation will recap the series of UN Conference of Parties (COP) meetings held since 1990 to frame a worldwide response to global warming.  The latest in the series of meetings was held in early December 2011 in Durban South Africa.  This was a make or break event:  the Kyoto treaty adopted in 1997 needed to be reauthorized, the US had never signed Kyoto, Kyoto did not require emission reductions from growing GHG producers China, India and Brazil, and Canada was threatening to leave the Kyoto framework.  The presentation will cover the outcome of the negotiations in Durban between most of the world’s nations, and the plan to move forward.
COP17/CMP7 — The 17th Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
